Raising Black Swallowtails:
Introduction
 
Learn how to raise these beautiful butterflies on live host plants using a variety of methods and determine what method works best for your particular situation. The students will raise 30 caterpillars through their life cycle. You will also learn about the various host plants used by the Black Swallowtail butterfly.

The following supplies are available through Flutterby Gardens(contact Connie for pricing):

Eggs (30 minimum)

1 st & 2 nd instar caterpillars (30 minimum)

30 Eggs or 30 new born caterpillars and a rearing container are needed prior to the start of the course and enough host plant material to rear the caterpillars through the 5 th instar. You can start your own host plants, have a supply of native host plant material available for daily harvesting, you can purchase fennel, parsley, dill, and rue at some local garden centers (organic plants only, no pesticides), or through Shady Oak Butterfly Farm.

Carrot tops can also be started in advance and used to feed larva. For instructions, contact Connie.
