Butterfly Release Methods

Different Types of Butterfly Releases

Remember, a butterfly release must always be held outside.

There are basically two types of butterfly releases; Individual and Mass Release.

The Individual Release is when you hand the butterflies out in envelopes that they came in and each person releases them at a given time.

A Mass Release is when all your butterflies are transfered into one or more containers. They are handed to one or more individuals to be released all at one time.

Which way should you release your butterflies?

With a Mass Release everyone is focused on the butterflies as they are being released. So whoever releases the butterflies will be the center of attention. The butterflies do need to be transferred into the mass release container, though. This is usually done an hour or two before the release time. This is not hard to do. All you have to do is make a small slit in the container from which the butterflies are to be released and then slide each butterfly into it. You must keep the butterflies in a cool and dark place so that they do not hurt their wings before the release.

With an Individual Release there is nothing to do, other than making sure that the butterflies are still cool and okay. About an hour before the release, depending on how hot or cool it is outside, you will want to take out the ice pack and start to warm up the butterflies. The butterflies are then handed out to the individuals and when they are released, each individual will be watching their butterfly fly away.

Regardless of whichever way you choose to release your butterflies, you will want to designate one person to be in charge of the butterflies. They will either be transferring the butterflies and caring for them until the release or checking the individual envelopes to make sure that they are all okay and then handing them out later.

Do not be alarmed if one or two butterflies do not make it. Butterflies have very short life spans as adults. One or two weeks is the normal life span for an adult butterfly in the summer. A reputable farmer will include extras just in case if one or two butterflies do not survive.

With either butterfly release, all of the butterflies will not just up and fly away. You will have the butterfly that just wants to linger around for a little longer. You may even have to encourage some butterflies to leave. This is a wonderful time to have cameras ready and snapping photos!

As far as which way do you want to do a butterfly release? That depends on the effect that you want to make. Both ways are quite lovely. And you can also do variations of both to get different effects. You can talk this over with the butterfly farmer and tell them what effect you hope to create. They will be more than happy to help you out.

No matter which way you decide to do your butterfly release you will be making a lasting memory that will last a lifetime. You will definitely not regret adding the beauty of a butterfly release to your event.
